Merit Health Wesley Recognizes Nurse of the Year During Nurses Week Celebration

Hattiesburg - Merit Health Wesley recently awarded the 2017 Nurse of the Year Award and Patient Choice Award during National Nurses Week. Jennifer Thornhill, RN, was named 2017 Nurse of the Year.
“Jennifer is such an asset to our team,” said Julie Roberts, RN, Manager of Nursing Services for the hospital’s orthopedics, oncology and neurology unit. “People naturally gravitate to her because of her kind spirit and congenial nature. Patients, physicians and co-workers love to work with her. Even on the busiest of days, she sets the example for others by jumping in where needed. She’s been an excellent resource for new nurses as well.”
Thornhill received a Nursing degree from Pearl River Community College in 2005. She has worked at Merit Health Wesley for 12 years, serving as both a staff nurse and a charge nurse.
“She truly exemplifies the character and attributes of a stellar nurse and employee. Your day will always be made a little brighter having seen her. She is so deserving of this award because she truly is a wonderful representation of what a nurse should be,” said Roberts.
Jennifer Jarrell, RN, received the Patient Choice Award, recognizing her commitment to putting her patients first, every time.
“Jennifer is very open about how much she enjoys working here and it’s evident to her patients,” said Britton Mathis, Director of Nursing Services for the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. “She spends a lot of time educating her patients and their families to ensure they understand the details of the care they are receiving, as well as encouraging them. The best compliment is when her co-workers request her when they have a family member in the hospital.”
Jarrell earned her Nursing degree from Jones County Junior College in 2014.
Merit Health Wesley’s Nurses Week celebration also included a spa-themed nurses’ breakfast with chair massages, free Starbucks coffee and gifts, and a Mexican-style fiesta luncheon.
