Hattiesburg -- In celebration of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, more than 100 volunteers were recently honored at Merit Health Wesley’s annual Volunteer Appreciation luncheon, with awards given to the Volunteer of the Year and to those with the most volunteer hours accumulated.
Deane Rosenbarger was named Volunteer of the Year. Rosenbarger, has been a volunteer at Merit Health Wesley since 2011 and is known for his dedication and dependability as the “captain” of the hospital’s shuttle service, where he escorts patients and guests around the hospital campus.
“Deane has a true heart for helping others,” said Katherine Pittman, Director of Customer Service Excellence at Merit Health Wesley. “He is not only reliable but he is also a joy to be around. He is attentive to our patients and visitors and enjoys every opportunity to assist those who are visiting our hospital.”
Rosenbarger was not the only volunteer deserving of recognition for outstanding service. With 1,274 hours in 2016, Ike Collins, was recipient of the Ben Broom Award for the most hours served in 2016. Collins was also recognized as the volunteer with the most accumulated hours of service over time, accumulating 15,425 hours over 13 years of service. Jim Killingbeck was recognized as Shuttle Driver of the Year, and the Joan Harper Award for the Chain Gang Knitting Club member with the most hours served in 2016 was awarded to Nadia Borko.
“We have truly great champions of service in our volunteers,” said Pittman. “We appreciate the time, the smiles, the heart-felt gestures, and everything else that they give so selflessly to our hospital and out community.”
